We're All Sad And Other Truths I've Learned

Yesterday's email (I'm sad and this is what I am doing about it) seems to have struck a chord with people in the way I hoped it would. I have never had so many replies from you all. Thank you. They all seemed grateful that I articulated something they needed to read or feel. I'm really glad I sent it. I did have to be a bit "brave" (thanks Jenny), but I wrote it after realising that me sharing my feelings helped a client. They felt less alone. And so I got to thinking, what else do I know...

Some things have happened that I wish hadn't happened. My circumstances are not how I want them to be. My luck has been out recently. I've been thinking I was turning a corner for a while but it hasn't happened. I laughed ironically at something last week and thought, surely nothing else can go wrong ... then it did. And at the same time there's a voice in my head going, "you're a professional personal improvement-y person, so why can't you sort this out?" Which frankly isn't helpful. Thanks...

"Ambition stops being healthy the moment it becomes a mask for fear." So said Alex Hormozi. And I know where he's coming from. Fear isn't a clean burning fuel. It's not sustainable either. Use fear and you'll move fast. You'll escape danger. But you won't last long before you burnout. But I also know that many of us try to make changes because we fear staying as we are. We're terrified that, "this is it". And we determine to do something about it. The problem with this kind of fear is that it...

Let me tell you about Bill (not his real name, but a real person). Bill had a good job. And Bill was good at his job. If young Bill had been able to see what older Bill had achieved, he would have been amazed. Because all he really did when he was younger was hit golf balls on the rec with his cousin. You see young Bill grew up in a community with not many aspirations. Not a bad community, but not a successful one either. Bill had some academic skills and they got noticed and rewarded at...

I am about to give you some FOMO. Sorry! Every Friday I host HeRO Hour. I invite all of the clients in my program and some of my 1:1 clients too. It is absolutely the highlight of my week. And I know it is something they all look forward to. Why? Because we are in it together. Every single person on that call has two things in common: They are determined to improve themselves. To figure out how they can achieve their potential while living a good life. They are mission-driven. And so, they...

All models are wrong but some are useful. Have you ever heard that? I love it. You see, in the coaching world, there are all sorts of tools we can use to assess people's traits and personalities. There are DISC profiles, Myers Briggs assessments and even things that tell you what sort of animal you are. Spoiler alert, I'm a human. Joking aside, none of these things tell you anything fundamentally true about yourself. If they tell you you are a tiger, red coloured or a Type GBA person it isn't...

I can't think of a single time when one of my clients has had a problem with ambition. At least, not a problem caused by being ambitious. Sometimes coaching helps people to realise they have set the wrong ambition. More often, people don't have enough ambition. But ambition itself is never the problem. However, forgetting who you are in pursuit of your ambition sometimes is. I see this in people who have successful careers, but their relationships are a mess. Or people who dedicate themselves...

"You're not everything you could be, and you know it." Jordan Peterson Now there's lots I don't like about the things that Jordan Peterson says, but this, I love. You see, a big part of my motivation for everything I do is to see if I can achieve my potential. And the only way to find out what that potential is is to keep testing the limits. To keep raising the bar. Now, I also strongly believe that I am not capable of being happier than I am in this moment. After all, we only ever live in...

An inner voice is an internal monologue. For most people, this is literally a voice, a stream of words and ideas. This helps us to plan, reflect, and ruminate. However, this isn’t always a positive experience. Not everyone has an inner voice. Some people process thoughts as images, sensations, and abstract concepts. This can make it harder to plan and to self-regulate. But potentially helps with visualising possibilities. Today, I am running a session for my HeRO Program clients called, How...

I have two contradictory ideas in my mind that I believe are true. But, they are true at different times. The first is: We are not designed to live in a perpetual springtime. Many people at this time of year are feeling their energy sliding. Their capacity is not what it was. The spring is not in their step. And maybe that's because we're attuned to the seasons. Once the harvest is in, it is time to conserve energy to survive the winter. The second is: Everything you want is on the other side...
